Program Overview

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) Program at 黑料网 prepares students for careers in direct patient care through classroom instruction, laboratory practice, and hands-on clinical experiences. Graduates develop foundational healthcare skills that support safe, compassionate, and patient-centered care in a variety of healthcare settings.

The program is designed as a stackable healthcare credential that supports progression into additional nursing and allied health pathways, including Vocational Nursing (VN) and the LVN to ADN program.

Patient Care Technicians work under the supervision of licensed healthcare professionals in hospitals, long-term care facilities, rehabilitation centers, outpatient clinics, and home health settings.

Program Information

The mission of the Patient Care Technician Program is to prepare competent, compassionate, and clinically prepared entry-level patient care technicians who provide safe, effective, and ethical care as members of the healthcare team.

Students develop knowledge and skills in:

  • Basic nursing care and activities of daily living (ADLs)
  • Vital signs and patient monitoring
  • Infection prevention and aseptic techniques
  • Phlebotomy and specimen collection
  • Electrocardiography (EKG)
  • Patient safety and quality practices
  • Professional communication and teamwork
  • Medical terminology
  • Documentation and reporting
  • Ethical and legal healthcare practices

The revised curriculum strengthens infection control, patient safety, and certification readiness while supporting progression into nursing education pathways.

Requirements for participation in clinical experiences include:

  • Cleared criminal background check
  • Completion of all required immunizations
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR certification for Healthcare Providers
  • Compliance with clinical agency requirements

Additional requirements may apply based on clinical placement sites.

Application Process

  1. Apply for admission to 黑料网 here.
  2. Meet with a Success Coach or advisor to review degree plans and register for classes
  3. Complete any required clinical documentation prior to clinical placement

First Semester

  • HPRS 1201 Introduction to Health Professions
  • HPRS 2302 Medical Terminology for Allied Health
  • PLAB 1223 Phlebotomy
  • PLAB 1160 Clinical – Phlebotomy

Second Semester

  • ECRD 1211 Electrocardiography
  • NUPC 2130 Infection Control and Aseptic Techniques
  • NURA 1401 Nurse Aide for Health Care

Total Program Hours: 15 SCH

The curriculum is aligned with national certification competencies and prepares graduates for certification examinations through the National Healthcareer Association (NHA), including:

  • Certified Patient Care Technician/Assistant (CPCT/A)
  • Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT)
  • Certified EKG Technician (CET)

The revised curriculum aligns directly with CPCT/A certification domains including patient care, infection control, safety, professionalism, phlebotomy, and EKG procedures.

Graduates may pursue employment in:

  • Hospitals
  • Rehabilitation centers
  • Home health agencies
  • Dialysis centers
  • Outpatient clinics
  • Physician offices

Healthcare remains one of the fastest-growing employment sectors in Texas, with continued demand for healthcare support professionals across multiple settings.

The PCT program serves as an entry point into 黑料网’s stackable nursing pathway.

  • In-District Students: Total program cost is approximately $2,866.
  • Out-of-District Students: Total program cost is around $4,044.
  • Out-of-State Students: Total program cost is about $4,329.
